Liszt Festival Bratislava 16. - 25.10.2026
Franz Liszt sa vracia do Bratislavy – Franz Liszt Returns to Bratislava
Festivaldirektor Vladimir Nagy: »The festival was born from a desire to symbolically bring Liszt back to Bratislava, recall his deep ties to our city and present his music in all its power, diversity and timelessness.« (Das Festival entstand aus dem Wunsch heraus, Liszt symbolisch nach Bratislava zurückzubringen, an seine tiefe Verbundenheit mit unserer Stadt zu erinnern und seine Musik in ihrer ganzen Kraft, Vielfalt und Zeitlosigkeit zu präsentieren.)

Liszt a Bratislava – Liszt and Bratislava
Liszt’s family roots reach back to Rusovce, now a borough of Bratislava, where his grandmother Barbara Schlesak was born and married Georg Adam Liszt at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in 1775.
Liszt’s father, Adam, studied at the Royal Catholic Grammar School in Bratislava, graduating in 1795, and later studied philosophy at the Royal Academy in Bratislava. As a novice in the Franciscan Order, he also spent time at monasteries in Malacky and Trnava.
At the age of nine, Franz Liszt performed in Bratislava on 26 November 1820 at the home of Count Michael Esterházy. His extraordinary performance during the concert persuaded the Hungarian nobility to fund six years of further study with an annual scholarship of 600 florins.
Liszt repeatedly returned to Bratislava, performed in public and private, and supported the city’s Church Music Society. In 1884, he conducted his Hungarian Coronation Mass here – his final major concert in Bratislava.
